Linear Motors and Encoders
Linear servo motors drive the Gemini at speeds of up to 80 inches per second. The direct-drive technology offers
faster speed, acceleration and deceleration than rotary motor and leadscrew drive systems.
 
The primary advantage of linear motors is the high ratio of peak force to motor inertia. As a result, almost all of the
motor force can be used to accelerate the moving load. In addition, linear motors have inherently smoother motion
and exceptionally high accuracy and repeatability, governed by the linear encoders.
 
Linear optical encoders provide positional feedback in increments of 5 microns. The reading head is mounted on
the moving part and positional data is stored in a reflective metallic strip fixed to the base. Precise position adjustments
are then made to the X and Y locations of the dispensing
